Celadon Lobed Pot with Lid

This celadon vessel consists of the body and lid. Morphologically, it is a pot with a lobed rim, a wide mouth, and a flat base. Six vertical lines on the exterior were designed to mimic the shape of melon. The raw material is probably kaolin. The exterior glaze was probably attained by dipping while the interior was achieved by filling slip inside and shaking. The colour is achieved by adding iron to the slip before a high-temperature second firing in a reduced kiln atmosphere where iron oxidises and produces ferrous oxide. The crackling effect, or crazing, is a result when glaze coating shrinks more rapidly than body. Traces of throwing rings indicate it may be wheel-thrown.
